Welcome to The Art of Scintography.
This publication is about endless possibility. It springs from that essential moment of joy included with every brand new box of perfectly arrayed colored pencils, or watercolors, or pastels. Even a brand new set of charcoal pencils holds that irresistable promise of the boundless power of creation. When I discovered that I could put something of my very own on the Internet, shaped in endlessly fanciful ways with the marvelously simple hypertext markup language, I had that same feeling. But HTML was just the beginning. Each time I discovered a new, more powerful software "trick", it was like opening a brand new box of colors -- a brand new box of endless possibility. Thus I became hooked on this new medium -- a confluence of writing, programming, photography, typography, and ultimately all the other 'graphys I can think of -- all expressed through this medium of scintillating screens. What else to call it but Scintography! There are many books on the market offering guidance to web page designers just getting started. This one is mine. Everyone who follows this path collects bits and pieces of useful information along the way. Now and then, I have endeavored to sort through my own collection and arrange it in a way that will prove useful to those who follow. I started playing with HTML in 1994. When I got around to JavaScript, I was delighted with the possibilities it offered. I began creating some simple tutorials, thinking I could use them to teach the wonders of the Internet to my children. Alas, their enthusiasms lie elsewhere. What to do with my tutorials? I have been determined many times, over the years, to put them online. Every time, I find them sadly obsolete and in need of repair. If you are reading this, it is because I have had a serious discussion with my inner critic and, at last, achieved some degree of pragmatic compromise. The first part of this text is a general discussion of the Internet and the components and concepts involved in adding a page to this amazing phenomenon. At the heart of this text are the Hands-On Tutorials for html, style, and script. In culmination, the Cut-and-Paste Templates, combined with the Image Gallery, provide a starting place for viewers creating their own pages. So there you have it. Browse a while, try the tutorials, explore the applications, and before you know it, you will discover that you, too, are a Scintographer. | |||||||||||||||||||
